MEET JEROME TAILLARD
WHAT IS YOUR FULL NAME AND AGE?
My Name is Jerome TAILLARD. As for my age, I am mature enough yet, not too old to manage the challenges involved in my position
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB POSITION?
I am the General Manager of the most glamourous resort in PHU QUOC
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN PHU QUOC OR BEEN COMING TO PHU QUOC?
I arrived in Phu Quoc on October 2013
WHAT DID YOU KNOW ABOUT PHU QUOC BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE AND HOW DID YOU END UP AT CASSIA COTTAGE?
I started to get interested in Phu Quoc when ACCOR offered me the job of opening the… Mercure Phu Quoc Resort and Spa !
I was very tempted by this island that was still on going developpement, the pristine beaches, the preserved primary forest and open a resort was a good challenge but well after 6 months things turned wrong with the owning Company and had to move on.
ACCOR sent me to Saigon to do consulting for the PULLMAN that was opening.
Then one of my GM friend on the island told me that the CASSIA COTTAGE owner was looking for a GM and decided to meet Mark the Owner. I can’t say that it was love at first sight but we share the same hotel dream : unique, luxury but not pretentious, genuine and based on people interactions, a home away from home…
Since, the resort has matured well. Mark have engaged exiting enhancements such as the new Spice House restaurant and a very trendy new infinity swimming pool overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and a private beach ensuring a peaceful retreat whatever the time of the day or the spot your are in the resort. Most of all CASSIA COTTAGE Resort is now completing 40 additional large deluxe and premium rooms with a modern colonial style.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION?
I chose this profession and decided to become a General Manager of luxury hotels at the age of 16 y.o, fascinated by what evolves around the profession such as travel, luxury, elegance, sophistication, service, refinement, meeting stars… My gran father was a Chef and restaurant owner in Paris and his father before him when my gran uncle was an hotelier in Paris as well. Hospitality and Food and Beverage are a family thing that is indeed in our blood.
Today and after many years in operations, what I love most in my job is the variety of activities and responsibility a hotel GM has to assume. In a day I am not only dealing with accommodation or food & beverage matters but I am also very involved different fields such as maintenance, IT, Human resources, legal, yield management, Sales & Marketing, projects, PR, Finance, etc… I do never get bored
WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION?
A hotelier don’t close his shop in the evening till the next day and even less on weekends, work is never finished therefore one tends to spend a lot of hours at work unless you are very well organized.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT PHU QUOC?
Phu Quoc is first an island and I always dreamt to live all year long near by the sea, I am a PADI Dive Master as well and such a location allow me to enjoy the marine life on my day off.
Then the fact to be there when the island start it’s development is really fascinating, it seems that I am kind of an adventurer that discovered a new land. When I arrived there was only dirt tracks and electricity during 4 hours a day. Now there are roads, Electricity from mainland, proper internet…Be a part of this evolution is really exciting.
TELL US A SURPRISING FACT THAT THE PUBLIC MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I am attracted to outdoor nature activities, Diving of course but as well forest trecks, smim in a waterfall, having a lunch in the middle of the jungle, contemplate a sunrise or sunset from a high point of view and well that’s not very “nature” but I love riding motorbikes….the feeling to be free and alive.
WHAT IS THE MOST OUTLANDISH THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE AND WHY?
Such a difficult question to answer, the most memorable moment relates to my adventure travel and I would hesitate between waking up in the middle of the forest during a treck in North Thailand mountains with a black pig just in front of me or diving in the most beautiful spots in south east Asia in the middle of sharks, napoleon, manta Rays and turtles or, the sunset on the Borobudur where the sun rises in the middle of a Volcano surrounded by the jungle where you can see humidity going out and hear the monkeys waking up….
